Every year the college undertakes a cross college survey of the
induction process which happens at the beginning of the academic
year. These results help the College as a whole to evaluate their
services, understanding what we are doing well and identifying
areas for improvement.

DCSU Gaming Club!
Like videogames? Whether you are a devoted gamer or a novice,
the DCSU Gaming Club is the place to be! We're organising gaming
get-togethers every Thursday 3pm-5pm in the common room, where
members can play with next-gen consoles on large projector screens
complete with surround sound for a truly awesome gaming
experience.

Cybermentors
20 Doncaster College Students have recently volunteered to be
trained as CyberMentors.
CyberMentors are young people aged 11-17 who receive two days
intensive face-to-face training from BeatBullying staff which gives
them the skills and confidence to mentor offline and online. Once
graduating they mentor, guide, and support other young people on
issues of bullying, cyberbullying and wellbeing.

Barclays Money Skills Week 2013
Barclays Money Skills ‘weeks’ was held 22nd- 26th April 2013 at
the Hub, it is a money management programme designed to strengthen
further education students’ financial skills, knowledge and
confidence, reduce their financial stress and increase their
chances of achieving their financial goals.
The interactive week-long events cover themes such as budgeting,
saving and spending, and were designed to be entertaining and
informative. Activities are based on topics that interest students,
such as food, fashion, family and independent living.
Students are given the opportunity to build crucial skills for
the future and gain knowledge of personal financial issues and
controlling their budget.
The week was very well attended with 170 Students taking part in
the activities. Out of these Students; 67 were male and 103 were
female.
Two Students commented:
Male, 16, "I didn’t know anything about the financial aspects
and some of the consequences; my knowledge after the session has
been increased knowledge about credit and debit cards."
Female, 17, "I am going to start spending more of my money of my
‘needs’ rather than my ‘wants."

Student College Conference 2013
The Student Union held their annual Student College Conference
on the 23rd April 2013.
For this year’s conference the Union consulted with Students
about the topics and aspects of their lives which they need support
around to ease their transition into adulthood on which the
workshops would focus on. The Students expressed an interest in
building their knowledge of what they require to prepare themselves
for University.
Each learner received a conference pack which information about
what would be happening on the day and a brief description of the
three particular workshops.
This year’s themes were: The Student Loan, Applying to
University and the UCAS Process, and Student Accommodation. Staff
from Sheffield Hallam University and York St Johns, and Doncaster
College Staff delivered the workshops to Students.
The Conference was attended by 34 Students from across College.
The evaluation below is based upon the views of the delegates.
Students were asked to give feedback throughout the day on the
themes of the workshops. Candidates were also asked to give their
views about individual workshops.
Student comments included:
- I didn’t feel confident about applying to University, Now I
know more about University and I am confident in what I need to
do.
- I now know a lot more information about Student Finance and the
options that are available to me.
- I had poor knowledge before the session and now after the
session I had a lot more understanding of the University
process.

Four met Ed Miliband
Four young people from Doncaster College had an excellent
opportunity to meet the Leader of the Labour Party and put him on
the spot.
In front of an invited audience at Scawsby Community Centre,
Doncaster, Ed Miliband, MP for Doncaster North and Leader of the
Opposition, was asked some good questions from the College
students, about education and apprenticeships and support for
students who want to start their own business.
Attending Doncaster College Apprentices Rosie Browning and Britt
Jamison, and Business Diploma Level 3 students Amir Al-Rubai and
Luke Dunstan, were given full responses by Mr. Miliband to their
questions and encouragement for the future.

Jigsaw
Jigsaw is a health organsiation who provide emotional and
relationship based support. Jigsaw delivers regular workshops in
College to a range of learners offering healthy relationships
advice, sexual health awareness and substance misuse
information.

M25
M25 are a housing project that provides information, advice and
support to the most vulnerable. The Student Union has strong links
to M25 and can refer and support students who are experiencing
housing difficulties.

JP Awarded
JP Heseltine, a volunteer on the Vol.Success programme, recieved
an award from the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire. JP was nominated
by Jo Holt, Vol.Success Co-ordinator, who said, "JP has been
incredibly committed to volunteering and has supported Life Skills
learners working on the Hub Diner. JP has experienced some
challenging situations but his commitment to his education and
development has remained steadfast."
JP was Highly Commeded by the High Sheriff.

Help Stop Bullying
We don't tolerate any kind of bullying in College. We know that
reporting this kind of problem can be difficult so in addition to
being able to talk to your Turos, Pastoral Support Worker, Student
Union Worker or a College Counsellor, we have an online way of
reporting any bullying issues or problems.

South Yorkshire Police
The College works closely with South Yorkshire Police to make
sure everyone at the College is safe.
South Yorkshire Police hold a monthly drop in service for any
staff or students to come and speak directly to an Officer about
any Police matter they wish.
The drop in is 2-3pm in S1810 on the last Thursday of every
month.
To arrange to speak to an Officer outside of these times please
contact a member of the Safeguarding Team.

International Women’s Day 8th March 2013
Each year the College marks this day dedicated to women in
history who have raised the profile and presence of woman both
nationally and internationally. International Women’s Day has been
celebrated for over 100 years and is an opportunity to celebrate
women’s achievements and recognise the continued struggle for
equality for women across the world.
Informative posters about inspirational women were displayed
around The Hub.
The Student Union team held a coffee morning in partnership with
Platform 51, a service for girls and women.

"I am a student at Doncaster College and over the past couple of
weeks I have being taking part in groupwork. Over the past couple

Creative sessions for care leavers at Doncaster College.
Come and have a go at visual art, drama, photography and film,

Year 11 Transition
2012
Each year the Department of Welfare partners with DMBC Children
in Care Education Team to offer looked after Year 11’s the chance
to take part in a Forest School day. The Forest School day is part
of the Year 11 transition programme, where young people in care are
supported to access Further Education.
This year the focus was on building relationships and looking
forward to the future.
