Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships in
Childcare
Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills,
gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time.
What will you do?
You will be employed working in a Childcare environment, and
will be paid a minimum of the National Apprenticeship Wage which is
currently £2.60 per hour. You will work towards a
Vocational Qualification and Functional Skills.
What are the entry requirements?
You will need to complete functional skills assessments which
will help to clarify what Level of qualification you will be able
to study.
Employers may have their own entry requirements and some prefer
learners to have GCSE grades C/D in Maths and English.
What job will you do?
As an apprentice, the exact nature of your job role will depend
on your employer.
The Intermediate Apprenticeship is for those working under
supervision such as a nursery assistant, playgroup assistant
working in an out of school setting.
The Advanced Apprenticeship is for those who work on their own
initiative, planning and organising their own work and/or
supervising others, for example, a nursery nurse, playgroup leader
or a childminder working in their own home.
How long does your apprenticeship take to
complete?
The Apprenticeship is normally completed in 24 months.
What opportunities are available
afterwards?
After successful completion of this Apprenticeship there’s good
scope for progression. You may move up through levels of work, for
example, from nursery assistant to nursery manager. There are also
opportunities to undertake further training or assessment.

Functional Skills
You will work to achieve the following Functional Skills:
The level of qualification depends on the level of framework
being undertaken.
You will discuss your individual needs with your employer and
college representative.
