Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing

Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time.

 

WHAT DOES AN APPRENTICE DO?

Apprentices are employed and are paid.  The apprenticeship will involve working towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) and Key Skills.

 

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

  • A pre-requisite of an NVQ L2 in hairdressing or the equivalent. Candidates may be suitable for APEL
  • Strong interest in hairdressing
  • Friendly, caring disposition
  • Self discipline
  • Motivation and enthusiasm
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Smart appearance
  • All students will need to attend an individual interview prior to the start of the course
  • Personal progress file or a current reference from school/employer
  • Trade test and diagnostic testing prior to the start of the course
  • Salon employment

 

WHAT JOB WILL AN APPRENTICE DO?

The level 2 qualification will enable you to competently carry out treatments and services safely and effectively.  The course aims to provide level 2 practitioners with the necessary basic skills to be able to carry out shampoo and conditioning treatments, cutting, colouring, drying & setting & perming.  You will be taught through a combination of classroom activities, such as simulation/role-play, formal lectures, ILT methods, demonstration, tutorial and small group work plus in salon training.

 

HOW LONG DOES THE APPRENTICESHIP TAKE TO COMPLETE?

18 Months.  Hairdressing is a thriving industry which offers an interesting and rewarding career to the dedicated professional.  In today’s competitive business climate it is more important than ever for people to achieve a recognised qualification.  Doncaster College is renowned for its high quality training centre for Hairdressing, this course offers excellent  opportunities for the qualified level 2 stylist to advance their skills, whist been assessed on practical work in industry.

 

Mandatory units

  • G1 Ensure your own action reduce the risk to Health & Safety
  • G6 Promote additional product or services to clients
  • G9 Provide hairdressing consultation services
  • H27 create a variety of looks using a combination of cutting techniques

 

Optional units grp 1

  • H23 Provide hair extension services
  • H24 Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills
  • H25 Style and dress hair to achieve a variety of creative looks
  • H26 Style and dress long hair
  • H28 Provide colour correction services
  • H29 Perm hair using a variety of techniques
  • H30 Colour hair using a variety of techniques
  • BT 20 Provide Indian Head massage treatment

 

Optional units grp 2

  • G10 Support customer service improvements
  • G11 Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business
  • H32 Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities

 

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE AFTERWARDS?

The skills and knowledge an apprentice will acquire are highly transferable and there are many opportunities for an apprentice to develop their career in this sector.  Apprentices may also go on to achieve other, higher level qualifications.

 

NVQ

  • All apprentices will be required to complete an NVQ

 

Key Skills

  • Apprentices may be required to complete Key Skills

 

 

You will be required to provide your own hairdressing tools & equipment (excluding electrical equipment). A smart appearance in black and white is required. It may be necessary to bring in clients to fulfil aspects of the treatment / service range.
