Attendance
You are expected to be available to attend college Monday to
Friday 9am to 5.00pm and Friday 9am to 4.30pm. Your timetable will
be for 18 hours per week and will be explained to you during
induction week.
Course Description
The BTEC Foundation Diploma in Creative and Media is a one year
course designed to give you an introduction to the skills and
technologies you will encounter in the Creative Industries.
Students are not expected to have any previous knowledge or
qualifications in these areas but should display an interest in
pursuing an area of Art, Design or Media as a profession. This
might be as a Fashion Designer, Graphic Designer, Furniture
Designer, Artist, Animator or Photographer.
You will study Fine Art Painting; Sculpture using wood &
metal; Printmaking; Ceramics, Textiles, Computer Aided Design &
Photography. All activities will be underpinned by a core of
drawing/visualisation skills.
Functional skills are a part of this programme, English, Maths
and IT will be delivered throughout the course.
You must be prepared to work hard through the course and in your
own time to improve your skills.
Course Structure
The course consists of 6 units. Assignments are set to explore
various themes and lead up to a Final Major Project at the end of
the year.
You will study various components during which you will:
● Explore Visual Language in Media, Art and Performance
● Explore Materials, Techniques and Processes
● Explore and Develop Art, Media and Performance Ideas
● Carry out a project in Art, Media or Performance.
In addition you will take two specialist subjects which will
vary, but may include:
- Photography
- Textiles
- Printmaking
- 2D and 3D Design
- Painting
- Sculpture
- Video
- Digital Design
The components listed will be taught using a number of practical
workshops as well as traditional classroom sessions.
You will be expected to keep both a video diary and a working
journal of all your activities during your programme of study.
There will also be 10 days work experience built into your
study.
Course Assessment
Functional skills are embedded/included throughout the course,
you will be required to take an exam and/or complete a portfolio to
achieve these. The course is assessed continuously through varied
types of assignment work, e.g. case studies, live briefs,
presentations and projects with reviews at the end of each project.
There is a regular personal tutorial support system in which
learners can discuss their work and any other problems.
Entry Requirements
- There are no entry requirements for this course
- All applicants must complete an initial assessment in Maths and
English
- Attend an interview and to display a keen interest in Creative
and Media and, where possible, show evidence of that interest
through a portfolio of drawings, paintings or photographs of your
work.
Course Costs
There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old on 31
August 2010. However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal
kits, trips and personal stationery. A £50.00 materials fee to be
paid on enrolment. You will be informed of these at your
interview.
Course Enrichment
Activities such as educational visits will be arranged, which
are beneficial to this course and your learning. These activities
are optional and additional fees will be charged to you. Details
will be provided at the time of interview.
Course Progression
After the foundation diploma you may progress on to one of our
level 2 BTEC First Diplomas in Interactive Media and Animation,
Music, Performing Arts or Art & Design.
The Foundation Diploma qualification is equal to 5 GCSE’s at
grade D-G.
Course Career Prospects
After further study there are job opportunities in the creative
industries including graphic design, games designing, photography,
textile design, creative designing and picture editing.
