Two years full time
The course requires approximately 16 hours contact time per week which will be timetabled between Monday to Thursday 9am to 5.30pm and Friday 9am to 4.30pm.
This programme will introduce you to the building blocks of a career in Mechanical Engineering.
The first year of the course delivers the foundation knowledge required for a successful career in Mechanical Engineering and includes practical experience in workshops and laboratories.
The second year of the course builds on knowledge acquired in the first year. Topics are more specialised and studied in greater depth preparing students for progression to Higher Education if desired.
Year 1 Core Topics Include:
This unit consists of examining Engineering materials including atomic and molecular structure. It also includes examining material properties such as tensile strength and toughness. Material manufacture and uses e.g. welding, fastening and how they are used in the industry are also included.
This unit looks at forces, vectors - solving bending moments. The unit goes onto look at Newtonian motion - momentum and power. The unit then looks at fluid systems, pressures at depth, finally examining thermodynamics in Engineering e.g. Heat transfer linear expansion. This unit includes a lot of Maths.
This unit comprises of reading Engineering drawings, reading Engineering and writing Engineering reports.
This unit covers all aspects of pure maths such as: Algebra, Equations, Advanced Trigonometry, Statistics and Elementary Calculus.
This unit looks at Engineering components such as gears, pulley drive mechanisms. It also covers oils, grease and lubrication systems moving onto looking at complete systems including: Power Stations, refrigeration and cooling systems.
This covers all aspects of Health and Safety in the World Engineering such as legislation, responsibilities and general safety awareness within an Engineering environment.
There is also the opportunity to gain a National Vocational Qualification in workshop practices.
Year 2 Specialisations.
This unit consists of using CAD software to produce Engineering drawings, both orthographic and isometric. This unit also covers saving and editing drawings.
This unit covers basic CNC construction, programming using G-code and the use of CAD-CAM systems in Engineering.
This is a double unit which is mainly student led, it is intended that the student identifies a simple Engineering problem within their home or from a hobby. The student then manages the project from first inception to final poduct by identifying key areas such as time management, materials and costings. A diary will be kept a long the way.
This unit looks at and covers Pneumatic and Hydraulic systems in terms of how they work, design of systems and industrial applications of Pneumatic and Hydraulic systems within the Engineering environment.
All the above units will have some elements of practical tasks to perform using lab equipment, CAD software and computer software.
Assessment runs throughout the programme, combining projects, assignments and course work.
GCSE grade B or above in Maths and English and GCSE at grade C or above in Science. Alternatively, applicants must have a BTEC First Diploma Level 2 in Engineering (merits/distinctions required in key subjects)
There are no course tuition fees if you are under 19 years old on 31 August. You may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery.
Activities such as trips and visits may be arranged, which are beneficial to this course and your learning. These activities are optional and additional fees will be
charged to you. Details will be provided at the time of interview.
Successful students may pursue further studies within engineering at HNC/D level.
There may be job opportunities including engineering technician, team leader and craftsperson. Further study at higher education will create opportunities in employment roles including engineers, technical managers, programme managers, and project managers.
