BTEC EDEXCEL National Diploma in Music Practice – Level 3

Duration

Two Years full time

 

Attendance

You will be expected to attend between Mondays to Friday 9.00 am 6.00 pm

 

Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to work in the music industry. Although a wide range of music is explored, there is particular emphasis on popular music (rock, pop, R & B, dance/techno etc). You will also learn performance and rehearsal techniques in preparation for at least 5 performances during the course.

 

Course Structure

Units include:

  • Planning & Creating a Music Project

  • Working as a Musical Ensemble

  • Contemporary Songwriting Skills

  • Music & Sound For The Moving Image

  • Exploring the Music Profession

  • Producing a Music Recording

  • Music Production Techniques

  • Music & Society

  • Using Synthesisers and Midi Instruments

 

You will also study Functional Skills which include Maths and English.

 

Course Assessment

Students are assessed by a variety of methods including written coursework, portfolios of evidence and practical assignments. The assessments are to specific criteria and when successful are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction

 

Course Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSEs grades A*-C including English

  • First Diploma (Merit or above) in Music

  • For equivalent qualifications see the Entry Requirements Explained page
  • All applicants must complete an initial assessment in Maths and English and attend an interview
  • You will also be expected to attend a workshop/audition at which you will be expected to do a performance piece
  • Adult learners with prior experience who can demonstrate a capability to pursue the course successfully

 

Course Costs

There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old on 31 August 2010. However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery. You will be informed of these at your interview.

 

There will be a £ 50 studio fee for this course.

 

Course Enrichment

Activities such as trips and visits will be arranged, which are beneficial to this course and your learning. These activities are optional and additional fees will be charged to you. Details will be provided at the time of interview.

 

Course Progression

Many students will progress on to degree level courses such as the BA (Hons) Creative Music Technology at University Centre, Doncaster.
