Course Description

Would you like to work in a local retail business, a large superstore, a public sector organisation or a private Ltd company? Would you like to be part of a team in administration, sales, customer service or marketing? If Yes, this is the course for you.


The course will be supported by visiting speakers from local businesses, visits to local workplaces and work experience activities. This course will also provide you with skills and knowledge that may help you to develop your own small business.


The business industry has a high profile and many employers expect excellent personal presentation skills, therefore business dress standard is required

Course Structure

The course will enable you to develop skills that are essential for the modern-day workplace including:


Planning an idea for a realistic business in the local area; creating an eye-catching product display; delivering customer service; organising and providing support for meetings; managing a project; preparing for an interview; working in business teams; exploring costs involved in setting up a business and developing your understanding of profit; selling products and services; developing and promoting a brand for a business.


You will also take Functional Skills at the appropriate level to reinforce skills in English and Maths which are essential for further progression into further education and employment.

Course Assessment

You will be assessed by a variety of methods including project work, multiple choice examination, role play, practical demonstration, portfolio building, E-assessment, presentations, oral examination, task-based controlled assessment and written examination.


These MUST be completed to set deadlines and will require some self-study outside of college hours.

Entry Requirements

  • 4 GCSEs at grade D or above including English.
  • Business Level 1

  • All applicants must complete an initial assessment in Maths and English, attend an interview and also a selection process assessment.

Course Career Prospects

There is a constant demand for suitably qualified administrative and retail staff both locally and nationally. After further study there are many career opportunities including marketing, accounting, law. Close liaison with employers ensures that students are kept well informed of changes and opportunities that may arise.

Activities such as trips and visits will be arranged to theme parks, local retailers, law courts and forest school which are beneficial to this course and learning. These activities may require additional fees which will be charged to you. There will also be additional opportunities to develop your creative, teamworking and presentation skills by taking part in Enterprise competitions.

Course Costs

There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old.  However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery.  You will be informed of these at your interview.
