Duration
One year full time
Attendance
The course requires approximately 20 hours
contact time per week which will be timetabled between Monday to
Thursday 9am to 6.20pm and Friday 9am to 4.30pm.
Course Description
This award is aimed at people new to the
Engineering Industry who require qualifications in
Electrical/Mechanical specialisms.
The first year general course covers topics
both in Electrical and Mechanical, successful students will be able
to progress onto a National Certificate course and specialise in
either Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
Course Structure
The course requires the completion
of four core units and four specialist
units.
Core Units:
Working Practices in Engineering
Using and Interpreting Engineering
Information
Applied Electrical and Mechanical Science for
Technicians
Specialist Units:
Mechanical Maintenance Fundamentals
Electrical Maintenance Fundamentals
Using Computer Aided Drawing Techniques in
Engineering
Electronic Circuit Construction and
Testing
Mathematics for Engineering students
There is also the opportunity to gain a
national vocational qualification in workshop practices.
Performing Engineering Operations Level 1:
Mandatory Units
Working safely in an engineering
environment
Working efficiently and effectively in
engineering
Using and communicating technical
information
Specialist Units
Making components using hand tools and fitting
techniques
Using lathes/milling machines for
turning/milling operations
Course Assessment
The course is assessed by internal
practical or written assignments. As part of the assessment every
student must pass, or have passed each of the key skills at level 1
which are assessed on the course.
Course Entry Requirements
- 4 GCSEs grades D and above in Science. A
grade C is required in Maths
- For equivalent qualifications see the ‘Guide
to General Entry Requirements’ on page
- All applicants must complete an initial
assessment in Maths and English and attend an individual
interview
- Entry requirements may be waived for mature
students who have considerable relevant experience.
Course Costs
There are no course fees if you are under 19
years old on 31 August 2010. However, you may have to pay for
textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal
stationery. You will be informed of these at your
interview.
A £50 charge for course materials is applied
to all full time engineering courses.
Course Enrichment
Activities such as trips and visits may be
arranged, which are beneficial to this course and your
learning. These activities are optional and additional fees
may be charged to you. Details will be provided at the time
of interview.
Course Progression
Successful students can progress on to the
Level 3 National Certificate in Mechanical or Electrical
Engineering
Course Career Prospects
This programme is aimed at people wanting to
enter the industry in roles such as team leader, engineering
technician and craftsman; however after further study there are
wider job opportunities including senior engineer, technical
manager, project manager.
