Course Description

The Public Services Level 3 Diploma provides an excellent opportunity for you to identify and develop the skills required to gain a successful career in the Uniformed Public Services.

 

This course follows on from the BTEC L3 Subsidiary Diploma and will enable students to gain a further 60 credits. The course combines additional theory and practical application of knowledge to enhance existing essential leadership /team work skills and personal fitness levels.

 

The qualification would be of particular benefit to individuals who wish to progress onto a Foundation Degree/BA (hons) programme or enter employment in:

 

The Emergency Services:

  • Police, Fire Service or Ambulance Service

 

The Armed Forces:

  • Army, RAF, Navy, Royal Marines

 

Other Services:

  • Prison and Security Services
  • HM Customs and Excise
  • Community Service Organisations

Course Structure

The course is made up of 5 units (60 credits), 3 of which are compulsory, plus 2 specialist units.

 

Core Units:

  • Government Policies and the Public Services (10 credits)
  • Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services(15 credits)
  • Citizenship, Diversity and the Public Services (15 credits)

 

Specialist Units:

  • Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle for the Public Services(10 credits)
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (10 credits)

 

Students may also take part in competitive sports.

 

PE kit and walking boots are required, some outdoor clothing is provided. Learners will be expected to wear a ‘uniform’ of polo shirt, walking trousers and waterproof jacket.

Course Assessment

This course is internally assessed by means of performance observations, assignments, presentations, reports and projects. In addition to classroom based study the course includes outdoor activities including a week's residential visit, personal fitness training and visits to various Public Services Organisations.

Entry Requirements

  • 5 GCSE A*-C in English and Maths
  • A BTEC level 2 qualification in Public Services or a related discipline - a minimum of 4 merits
  • For equivalent qualifications see the Entry Requirements Explained page
  • All applicants must complete an initial assessment in Maths and English and attend an interview
  • All applicants must successfully complete a one week Introduction to Public Services course held in August

Course Progression Routes

  • Public Services Level 3 (Top up) BTEC Diploma

  • FD in Public Services, Policing, Criminology or Law

  • Fdsc in Forensic Science

  • BA (Hons) in Criminology, Public Services, Law, or Forensic Sciences

 

Learners that achieve the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma and the BTEC Level 3 (Top Up) Diploma will gain a national equivalence of 2 x A Levels.

Course Career Prospects

Job opportunities include the Fire Service, Police, Army, RAF, Prison Service, Ambulance Service and Customs and Excise.

Course Costs

There are no course fees if you are under 19 years old. However, you may have to pay for textbooks, personal kits, uniforms, trips and personal stationery. You will be informed of these at your interview.

 

Approximately £200 is required for uniform, a residential visit plus other entry fees throughout the year, e g canoeing and climbing.
