CPCAB Level 2 Introduction to Counselling Skills
Course Description
The course runs over ten weeks, three hours each week, and is
offered at different times and days throughout the academic year.
The course involves learning the skills of listening and
relationship building in a practical way. It seeks to enable
students to become more empathic to the needs of other people by
developing increased self awareness.
Students should gain good understanding of the concepts and
techniques of Person Centred Counselling, built into a three stage
model of helping. The course is certificated by the COUNSELLING
PSYCHOTHERAPY CENTRAL AWARDING BODY (CPCAB)
Topics covered include:
- Using Initial Counselling Skills Safely
- Establish the Helping Interaction
- Communicate Understanding of the Other Person's Concerns
- Focus on the Other Person's Agenda
- Use Initial Counselling Skills within the Helping
Interaction
- Use Study Skills within the Learning Process
Course Structure
The course is designed to meet the learning outcomes of the 7
units set by the Exam board.
Learning is evidenced by meeting criteria based on these 7 units
which can be documented in a weekly journal, skill practice
feedback from peers and the tutor to produce a complete
portfolio.
Each session in college will consist of material covering
practical listening skills, a basic introduction to some theory
(Carl Rogers and Gerard Egan), and short role play sessions using
the skills covered in class.
To pass the course the portfolio work needs to be marked as
‘proficient’.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements although students need to
be aware of the written assessment element of the course and be at
least 18 years of age.
Course Progression Routes
CPCAB see this course as a ‘stand alone’ taster course, but
progression is available to CPCAB’s Certificate to Counselling
Skills Level 2.
Course Career Prospects
The course provides many students with self awareness and
developed Listening skills which may enhance their current job
roles. It may also be beneficial as an introduction to a career in
counselling.
