BTEC Mechanical Engineering Diploma Level 3

Course Description

This course is designed to provide the academic input for apprentices seeking to follow the technician route into engineering. It is also the basic course for mature students aspiring to achieve national qualifications to support their practical experience.

Course Structure

Year 1 Units:

  • Properties and Application of Materials
  • Mechanical Principles and Applications
  • Communication for Technicians
  • Mathematics for Technicians
  • Applications of Mechanical Systems

 

Year 2 Units:

  • Computer Aided Drafting
  • Health and Safety in the Workplace
  • Computer Numerical Control of Machine Tools
  • Engineering Project
  • Electro, Pneumatic and Hydraulic Devices
  • Mechanical Measurement and Inspection Techniques

 

Please note that the specialist units offered are subject to change, due to level of interest and the demands of industry

Entry Requirements

  • 4 GCSEs grades A* - C including Maths and Science. (Maths preferably at Higher Tier)
  • BTEC Diploma Level 2 in Engineering (merits/distinctions required in key subjects)
  • Extensive practical experience in a relevant engineering occupation
  • A Maths and English assessment will be arranged for all applications and a Level 2 must be achieved before an interview is arranged.
  • Successful interview

Course Progression Routes

Successful candidates who have achieved the required grades have the opportunity to apply for the HNC in Mechanical Engineering.

Course Career Prospects

Successful completion will assist your progression in your current employment and also widen opportunities within the general engineering environment in roles such as Team Leader, Engineering Technician, Craftsperson or Project Leader.
