Course Description

If you haven’t studied a language before or your language skills are perhaps ‘out of date’ then this course is suitable for you. The course is the first year of a programme which prepares you to cope in a number of differing situations in everyday life, such as meeting people, finding your way around, shopping, etc. You will learn to identify and reproduce written vocabulary and short sentences as well as understand and speak the language using simple set phrases and vocabulary.

The course is appropriate for complete beginners.

You will not have to sit an examination for this qualification but you will need to prepare a portfolio of evidence of your studies. You will use all language skills, reading, writing, listening and speaking during the course and will develop confidence with using the target language.

Languages offered include French, Italian and Spanish. We welcome enquiries for other languages; however we would only be able to offer a course if there was sufficient demand.

These qualifications are intended for use by a wide variety of learners and are particularly suitable for:

  • Adults in part-time provision
  • Adults in the workplace
  • Adults in full-time learning
  • 16-19 learners in schools and colleges who wish to study a language
  • alongside their academic or vocational qualifications

Course Structure

The Doncaster College Language Skills Award consists of four communication skills, reading, writing, listening and speaking. Achievement of the Award is through completion of internally assessed and moderated activities completed during the course, and presented in student portfolios.

Entry Requirements

The Award Programme is aimed at beginners or those completing entry level achievement in specific minority languages. Learners should be 16+. All learners will need to complete an application and interview prior to enrolling. Courses must have 12 or more students in the group. If a course attracts sufficient interest then the learners will be invited to enrol at a specific group event

Course Progression Routes

These qualifications encourage progression through the levels and learners successfully completing the Award can progress to the Doncaster College Language Skills Certificate (subject to availability).

Course Career Prospects

Acquisition of a language alongside vocational or academic skills can enhance career prospects in globalised economies. Employers are increasingly seeing language acquisition as an invaluable skill in response to the challenge of flexibility and mobility in the labour market.
