Course Description

If you have studied a language before and your language skills are suitable to communicate fairly complex phrases and vocabulary whilst conversing in past, present and future situations, then this course is for you. It is also suitable for students who have completed a GCSE and would like to develop knowledge and fluency. The programme helps you to develop and improve your ability to communicate at quite a high level. You will learn to extend language use to discuss and communicate topical, contemporary and everyday issues.

The course is appropriate for learners who have a good range of vocabulary and can communicate and identify fairly complex phrases in the target language.

You will not have to sit an examination for this qualification but you will need to prepare a portfolio of evidence of your studies. You will use all language skills, reading, writing, listening and speaking during the course and will develop confidence with using the target language.

Languages offered include Italian and Spanish. We welcome enquiries for other languages; however we would only be able to offer a course if there was sufficient demand.

These qualifications are intended for use by a wide variety of learners and are particularly suitable for:

  • Adults in part-time provision
  • Adults in the workplace
  • Adults in full-time learning
  • 16-19 learners in schools and colleges who wish to study a language
  • alongside their academic or vocational qualifications

Course Structure

The Doncaster College Language Skills Diploma consists of four communication skills, reading, writing, listening and speaking. Achievement of the Diploma is through completion of internally assessed and moderated activities completed during the course, and presented in student portfolios.

Entry Requirements

The Diploma Programme is aimed at learners with a good level of prior knowledge of the target language or those completing the Doncaster College Language Skills Certificate. Learners should be 16+. Continuing learners will be offered an opportunity to enrol via their course tutor. Any new learners will need to complete an application and interview prior to enrolling. Courses must have 12 or more students in the group. If a course attracts sufficient interest then the learners will be invited to enrol at a specific group event.

Course Progression Routes

These qualifications encourage progression through the levels and learners successfully completing the Diploma can progress to other Advanced Language Studies subject to availability.

Course Career Prospects

Acquisition of a language alongside vocational or academic skills can enhance career prospects in globalised economies. Employers are increasingly seeing language acquisition as an invaluable skill in response to the challenge of flexibility and mobility in the labour market.
