MA Design Enterprise
Introduction
As a designer, you should have already attained a comprehensive
appreciation of the various practical aspects of Design. Your
theoretical knowledge underpins your conceptual thinking.
You should also be highly adept at producing relevant and
professional visual proposals. However, is there a gap in your
understanding? Do you know how to apply these accumulated skills to
the identification and development of enterprising ideas within
your own creative practice?
How often have you read or heard news stories that relate to the
development, success or demise of a specific company or product,
and thought about how you might develop or promote them yourself?
Do you think about alternative, innovative creative strategies that
could be applied to increase the sales of specific brands or
products?
Do you question client briefs or project requirements? By
thinking on a wider, strategic level you can demonstrate to others
that you are more than just a translator of a client’s wishes. You
are a focused and crucial problem-solver. From Fashion-Textiles and
Graphic Design-Branding to New Media, we are looking for exciting
visual thinkers who would like the opportunity to apply fresh
thinking to projects that challenge, confront and extend beyond
established design conventions and practices.
Career Aspirations
Are you happy in your current role? Where do you see yourself in
the future? As part of the programme you will also be asked to
articulate where and how you see yourself in the design arena. How
much do you really know about other careers and opportunities that
are available to you in a design environment or workplace? A range
of job roles (including the following) will be investigated to
expand your knowledge about contemporary practitioners: Managing
Director / Senior Designer / Visual Merchandiser / Pattern Cutter /
Fashion Magazine Editor / Fashion Buyer / Stage Costume Designer /
Brand-Account Director / Creative Director / Studio Manager.
Wider Awareness
Is there scope for UK companies to extend their reach into
global markets? Alternatively, is there potential for overseas
organisations to establish a presence in the UK? The MA Design
Enterprise requires you to address these questions by producing
work that demonstrates your skilfulness in the production of
groundbreaking tactical and visual communication. How would you use
your design skills to answer this?
Professional Practice
It is a recognised fact that many designers find it very
difficult to present their visual proposals to others. This can be
a daunting experience for even the most experienced presenters.
This area of the programme aims to help you learn more about
salesmanship skills and how to utilise and apply particular
presentation styles and strategies to sell your ideas.
Design Enterprise and Creative Application
The MA Design Enterprise course concludes with the
identification, development and creation of enterprising written
and/or visual propositions for a particular company or product of
your choice. You will utilise and combine all newly-acquired
practical and cognitive skills in the realisation of truly
enterprising submissions.
