Course Description
The BA (Hons) Law and Criminology degree covers a wide range
of interesting topics, which provides varied academic
opportunities, within a stimulating study environment.
Students develop an understanding of the ways in which
research has contributed to understanding of the place of law in
society as well as crime and crime control. We aim to
encourage a critical understanding of the different ways in which
criminality is explained, and encourage a critical appreciation of
the nature of law and its relation to social order and social
control.
Course Structure
At Level 4 students follow a course of study, which
includes:
- Civil Liberties and Human Rights
- Data Collection and Analysis
- Introduction to Criminology
- Law and Social Change
- Politics of Law and Order
At Level 5 students follow a course of study which
includes:
- Criminal Justice
- Criminal Law
- Criminology and the Explanation of Crime
- Family Welfare Law
- Research Methods in Criminology
- Work-based Learning (optional)
At Level 6 students follow a course of study which
includes:
Employment Law
- Law and Society
- Penology
- Policing and Crime Prevention
At level 6 (year 3) a dissertation must be completed
Course Assessment
Students are assessed by a variety of methods, including
essays, exams, projects and presentations. A dissertation
seated in key areas must be completed in Level 3. Students
electing for work-based learning will negotiate an individual
learning contract, with suitable supervision.
Entry Requirements
UCAS Tariff Points: 160 points from a combination of A Levels,
AS Levels, Vocational A Levels and Key Skills
2 A Levels Vocational A Level: At grade C in a 12 unit award
or a combination of a 6 unit award with other qualifications would
normally be expected
Access: Successful completion of the Access Certificate
- 60 credits in total, 45 of which must be at level
3.
We also welcome applications from people who do not meet the
standard entry criteria, but we would expect to see evidence of
continuing academic and/or professional development.
We also offer Access to Higher Education courses which are
ideally suited to anyone who needs preparation to study at degree
level.

Progression Routes
This pathway provides useful knowledge and skills to equip you
to move into a career in a variety of directly relevant fields
including para-legal work, legal advice, equal opportunities,
probation, police, prisons, voluntary organisations, community
safety projects, private agencies concerned with criminal justice
provision, research work and many other ancillary occupations
including social work and teaching.
There are also opportunities in all types of employment
where some legal knowledge is perceived as an advantage such as the
public sector and the business and service industries. Students may
go on to obtain further professional qualifications.
Fees
All fees are per academic year and are the standard charges
which may be subject to changes without notice. Standard fees
apply to students who have been resident in the UK/EU for at least
3 years. Please note some courses may have additional costs
for materials, exams and registration fees in addition to standard
course fees.
