IELTS UCLES – Academic English for the IELTS test

This course is designed to prepare students for the IELTS examination of academic English.  The participants will therefore be given practice in the four parts of the examination, which are listening, reading, writing and speaking.  However, the course is not confined to test practice.  We will also discuss other aspects of academic English and revise those aspects of grammar that may still create difficulties.  You need, of course, to have a good knowledge of English before you start.  If you have completed ESOL level 2, for example, you are at an ideal level for this course.

It is intended that the course will be interesting and enjoyable.  For that reason, students will be given the opportunity to discuss various topics that are in the news.  We will also read and analyse some articles from newspapers or magazines.  Listening practice will include excerpts from news broadcasts both on television and radio.

Towards the end of the course, there will be a practice test in the same format as the real one.  The students’ answers will be assessed according to the IELTS band scale and their result will help them decide if they are ready to enrol for the test.  We can advise students about whether they are ready for the test, and we can help complete the test application form, but the test fee (currently £125) is not included in the course fee.
