Integration of migrants into education and training systems, the labour market and society in general is still a major challenge in Europe. The football pitch, however, is one of the few social locations where integration seems to be successful in many cases. A good performance in sports entails social recognition which is otherwise often denied. Being a successful footballer does not only boost confidence and self-esteem of young migrants: It also involves transferable skills like self motivation, motivating others, teamwork, orientation towards set goals, perseverance, strategic thinking.

These are also key competences for a successful educational and professional career, and for integration into society.

The basic idea of Hattrick is to use the potential which young migrant footballers display on the football pitch for (re-)entering education and vocational training and thus improving their social integration.

Hattrick seeks to engage:

  • young migrants
  • young men with a migration background
  • other young male adults who are socio-economically disadvantaged, with a low level of education, or at risk of exclusion in lifelong learning activities.

Hattrick will develop and test “FootbaLLL” (Football and Lifelong Learning) workshops for 15-25 – year old football players in which:

  • Their transversal skills are developed through football are made visible
  • Pathways into education and training are (re-)opened
  • Their integration into society at large is improved.

Moreover, to enable football trainers to support their players in their process of integration into LLL, training called “FootbaLLL Coach” will be offered

5. Transversal: Expert and eXcellence ACademy for Teachers (EXACT) 2009-2011

The main focus of EXIST is on the WP Dissemination and Exploitation. The aim is to detect relevant key-decision makers and to create new (local, regional) networks of so-called chain partners

A Centre of Excellence in the field of lifelong learning will be established during the project period, utilising the experience and developed expertise from former European projects under Grundtvig, Leonardo, Socrates, Youth and Minerva. The Centre will:

  • act as a tri-lingual knowledge centre where good practices are made available in both digital (web site and e-learning platform) and non-digital way (reports, training programmes, hand books etc.).
  • guarantee  being self-supporting after the project period as relevant key actors, decision makers and end-users will be involved and networks will be activated ( e.g. needs analysis and marketing surveys  be carried out and public meetings held.)
  • Regional networks will be set up to optimize dissemination and exploitation of the products of EXACT. Internal monitoring systems and external evaluation, executed by a university, must vouch for a solid quality assurance.

The project products will be disseminated and exploited by:

  • an online, interactive platform (web site);
  • work shops and training;
  • regional dissemination meetings in the involved countries;
  • broad publications and information in the consortium and the partners' networks;
  • incorporation of the good practices into in the curricula and methodologies of partners and their networks;
  • the set up of a mobile team based on a train-the-trainer concept.
