Plagiarism

What is it?

Put simply plagiarism is passing off someone else work as your own. This not only gives the student an unfair advantage, but it also violates copyright legisation.

Why do students do it?

Often plagiarism results from students having limited knowledge of how to reference where they got information from. This makes teaching students about referencing and using bibliographies essential.

What is the solution?

Prevention is always easier than a cure.

Supporting students with developing study skills is a good approach to take. This will help students who are not sure how to reference or research for their assignments. In addition, it will ensure that students who are tempted to plagiarise are aware that tutors will be checking for this.

Checking assignments:

  • Be aware of each student's writing style
  • Have a good knowledge of resources students could use
  • Use technology to check for plagiarism automatically
