Inserting YouTube Videos into PowerPoint

A very simple way in which to make some of your material 'richer' is to embed videos from a website such as YouTube.

  1. Set up your PowerPoint presentation ready for the video. In this example we will use Harvard Referencing as the topic.

    Step 1
  2. Go to YouTube and find the video that you wish to use.

    Step 2
  3. While viewing the video, copy the URL from the navigation bar in your browser.

    Step 3
  4. Open up Note Pad or a similar word processing program and paste the link to your video into a new document.
    • Follow the instructions below to amend the URL so that PowerPoint can read it.

      Step 4
  5. Now go back to your PowerPoint presentation and load the Control Menu by going to:
    • VIEW > TOOLBARS > CONTROL TOOLBOX

      Step 5
  6. In the Control Toolbox, click the bottom-right button (when you hover your mouse over it says More Controls).

    Step 6
  7. A list will appear. Scroll down and select the 'Shockwave Flash Object' option.

    Step 7
  8. Your mouse cursor will now change to a cross-hair. Click and drag a rectangle into your presentation, about the size that you would like the video to be. Once you have done this a white box with a cross through will appear.

    Step 8
  9. Right-click inside this box and choose properties from the menu. A properties box should appear.

    Step 9
  10. In the properties box, navigate down to the 'Movie' optin and paste the URL you prepared earlier into the box to the right (as shown below). Close the box once you have done this to return to your presentation.

    Step 10
  11. Your presentation is now ready to go. Go to SLIDE SHOW > VIEW SHOW (or press F5 on your keyboard) to test your Presentation and to make sure that the video has embedded correctly.

    Step 11
