  • Students attend the six book challenge presentation.

On the 25th of May a selection of ESOL and V-Talent students who completed the six book challenge, run here at the Hub LRC, were invited to attend the final presentation.

Certificates and prizes were handed out by the new Principal, George Trow, who kindly gave a speech about the challenge and talked to many students afterwards. Our very own Librarian, Carol Wootton, who spear headed the campaign opened the ceremony followed by Naomi Nikhata, who talked about how much her ESOL students had achieved.

Refreshments were provided by Life Skills students which everyone enjoyed whilst watching a video of a selection of ESOL students talking about their books.

Overall the presentation went fantastically well. We'd like to thank everyone who took part in the challenge and everyone who helped with the running of the challenge and event. We look forward to running the challenge again next year!

  • It’s never too late to learn a new skill!

It’s Adult Learners week this week and we have a range of books on display to help inspire you to learn a new skill. The books range from canoeing to painting but remember we have thousands more books on Level 3 and a range of books on level 4 to help your brush up your key skills.

Feeling really inspired to learn? Why not enquire about a short/evening course here at Doncaster college, Courses range from floristry to hair and beauty, who knows it may even spark a new career choice.

  • Did you know?

We have been collecting news clippings about Doncaster College since the early 90’s, some from even earlier. These folders are kept in the Hub archive room.

If you’re doing a project on the colleges history or just generally interested, why not ask a member of LRC staff to access the folders and have a flick through…you might even see someone you know!

  • What your subject librarian can do for you

Joe Newsome – a Subject Librarian at University Centre

The majority of my time is spent helping students. This can range from loaning and returning books and answering all manner of enquiries from where is the toilet to how do you reference a podcast in an assignment. I teach information literacy to classes which includes; using the web effectively, Harvard referencing and using the specialist resources that the LRC provides to aid research. I am also the contact person at the LRC University Centre for students with additional support needs.

When not dealing directly with students I participate in many activities behind the scenes which support students. Including; liaising with tutors to make available books, journals, e-books and e-journals to support courses. I am a member of the LRC’s Customer Service group which aims to provide a consistent and responsive service to all users and the Information Skills & Publicity group which tries to find new and interesting ways to engage students with our resources.

  • What your subject librarian can do for you.

Liz Wright – a Subject Librarian at the Hub

As one of the subject librarians at the Hub I work with academic staff to get the right resources. This includes selecting books, e-books and online materials for you to use. For more help on your subject why not try using your subject page.

Another area of my work is provided training sessions on how to use the information the LRC provides for example: referencing, using online materials and how to find resources in the LRC.
