Copyright: keeping it legal
16th March 2009
Are you confused
about what you can copy without breaking the law? Well, below
is some information that may interest you.
The good news is you can copy parts of books
to help your studies for your course. The general rule is you
can copy up to 5% of a book or one journal article. More
information about this will be provided by the LRC’s
photocopiers.
Many of you will be using websites as part of
your studies. Again these are covered by copyright. It
is a good plan to look at the website for more details of what you
can copy.
For more information on copyright, pick up the
leaflet Copyright: a brief introduction from the
LRC. Part of “staying legal” when you copy information for
your course is recording where the information comes from.
Many of you will know about how to do this by referencing your
work. For those of you who want more information the LRC
website include advice on Harvard
referencing.
