Here at the LRC we have a few members of staff who have done volunteer work so I thought it would be interesting to share some of those experiences, remember if you have any experiences yourselves that you’d like to share please email the Hub LRC and it will be added to the blog

Camp America cabinBack in 2005 I took part in Camp America, it was the summer before the last year of my degree and I decided I wanted to do something different and travel a bit. I know you get some sort of a wage for working in a camp so it’s not volunteering as such but it was a similar sort of experience. I looked after girls between the age of 7 and 15 and taught them about subjects I am passionate about – arts and crafts. It is the single hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, be so far away from home for 4 months but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I am the person I am today because of that experience, it increased my confidence, leadership and friendship skills and would recommend it to anyone!

Children at AndrayaygasaSince the Tsunami hit Southern Asia on Boxing day 2004 I have been travelling to Sri Lanka to try and help in any way I can. Many schools and libraries were totally destroyed or very badly damaged and many professional staff killed.  Therefore I have been working with the Sri Lankan library association going into schools and libraries delivering story telling workshops to teachers and librarians and giving story telling and activity sessions to the children.  I saw some horrendous things out there and heard some even worse stories.  I wasn’t sure how I could help, but the people I have Children at Kirulaponaworked with assured me this was something so new to them it would help with morale amongst other things.  The children had never experienced anything like this before and just to see the excitement in there faces made it all worth while.

Since then my agenda has widened because I have worked in the slums of Colombo and a couple of the orphanages out there.  What an experience that was.  You see these things on the TV, but it is much worse in real life.

The people of Sri Lanka have suffered so much with the tsunami and the troubles out there and they are all so nice.  The children always have a smile on their face and yet most of them have so little.

On my next trip I want to go round to the east of the country which has just recently been liberated.  If this is going to be possible, only time will tell.  I am used to being stopped at gun point by the security forces, so I’m hoping it will be no worse than that now!

Why not celebrate by picking up a book today, we have a selection; both by him and about him, also keep a look out for the off air recording of the recent BBC Program ‘The Tree of Life’ coming soon on our shelves.
