Steven Stretton has received the
Computing Functional Skills Student of the Year Award for 2012 at
Doncaster College.
Steven, who is 20 years old and from Worksop,
has just finished the first year of a two-year advanced GCE Applied
ICT Level 3 course and has also been working towards a functional
skills English Level 2.
Steven received the award because he has
worked conscientiously and diligently on his English Level 2 and as
a result he has made the most progress over the year. His
self-confidence has increased substantially and he thoroughly
deserves the Student of the Year Award
Jayne Eland, ICT and functional skills
lecturer at Doncaster College and Steven’s tutor, decided to set up
the award with the intention of encouraging students to aim for
recognition for their academic achievement, contribution and
conduct in sessions. The awards were also set up to highlight the
importance of the use of English and Mathematics in everyday
life.
Initially, it was set up as a monthly award
with the winners eligible for the overall student of the year. This
produced a positive atmosphere in sessions amongst learners and
inspired a competitive spirit so much so that each month the
students were eager to hear who had achieved the award.
Steven said ‘It’s been absolutely fantastic
here at Doncaster College, the travelling is hard but it’s well
worth it as I’ve learnt lots of new skills and the lecturers are
very helpful and give you lots of advice. Eventually, when I finish
here I want to go on and study for a degree in computing at
university in Sheffield.”
