Sixteen-year old Doncaster College student Ashley Appleyard was the toast of the college when he finished second in the 400 metres at the North of England Indoor Athletics Championships.

The event was held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield in January and Ashley was competing in the Under 20’s making him the youngest competitor in that section.  He also managed to back up his second by finishing third in the 200 metres.

Ashley said: “My aim was always for a medal at the event, however it’s not the best time of year to be competing as I am in the middle of my intensive pre-season training”

Asked what his aspirations were for the future he simply stated “I just want to continue to bring down my times down and to earn my GB kit in the future”.

Ashley is currently studying BTEC Level 3 Sports and Exercise Science at the College and has always had a keen interest in sports and especially the technical side, which has fuelled his desire to learn.

“It’s helped me with my mental and physical preparation as an athlete and at the same time athletics has also helped me with my coursework” he stated.
