Doncaster College's new Principal George Trow presents the certificates at a ceremony held in the Learning Resource Centre on Tuesday 25th May 2010

Students from Doncaster College have recently been encouraged to ‘get the reading habit’ by completing the Six Book Challenge.

The Challenge is a nationwide event held by libraries, colleges, adult centres and prisons across the country aimed at encouraging less confident readers to tackle six books between January and June.

Many of the college’s students who took part are learning English as their second language, and were encouraged to keep a reading diary, exchange books regularly, write book reviews and use computers to contribute to the Six Book Challenge blog about their experiences.

The challenge was organised by the College’s Learning Resource Centre where students had the opportunity to use the wide range of ‘easier to read’ resources and as a result a high rate of success was achieved and this was recognised by a presentation of certificates by new Doncaster College Principal George Trow.

A College spokesman said “The challenge has helped the confidence of the students and it has increased their motivation to develop a reading habit.  Many say they have enjoyed the Challenge and will continue to read for pleasure.”
