The Venerable Peter Burrows first act after being named as the new Bishop of Doncaster last Thursday was to pop into Doncaster College to meet with students and staff.
He was welcomed by George Trow, Principal of the College and a group of learners and young people.
He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Jane Burrows along with the Bishop of Sheffield, The Rt Revd Dr Steven Croft; The Archdeacon of Doncaster, The Venerable Bob Fitzharris; The Vicar of Doncaster, The Revd Canon Dr Paul Shackerley; and the Diocesan Director of Education, Ms Heather Morris.
They were treated to a buffet in the College’s Waterfront Restaurant, prepared and served by Hospitality and Catering students, and chatted for an hour or so before heading off to the Mansion house on High Street.
"I don’t know Doncaster very well so I'm keen to come and meet with people from all sections of the wider community and to understand the opportunities and problems that exist," said the new Bishop.
Earlier in the day, 10 Downing Street had announced that The Venerable Peter Burrows, 56, currently Archdeacon of Leeds in the Diocese of Ripon & Leeds, was to be the new Bishop of Doncaster, in the Diocese of Sheffield.
The new Bishop appeared as bishop-designate at Sheffield Cathedral and then Doncaster Minster before arriving at the College.
He is taking over from Rt. Revd Cyril Ashton, who retired after 11 years of service, and will be consecrated as the Bishop of Doncaster at York Minster on 2nd February next year. Welcome services are being planned in Sheffield Cathedral on the 5th February and in Doncaster Minster on the 11th February.
