Name: Hayley Freeman
Job: Learning Resource Assistant
Started at college: 2005
I began working for the college back
in November 2005 as a student resource assistant within the
Learning Resource Centre. This role allowed me to work at both the
Waterdale & High Melton Campus’. Then in March of this year I
became a full time member of staff changing my role to a Learning
Resource Assistant. Within my role at the college I also provide
admin support for Ann Hill who is The Director of Learning &
Information Services here at Doncaster College.
Recently I have become a volunteer mentor for
The Children’s University. The module that I am taking part in is
called: Shakespeare without tears and the school involved is
Lakeside Primary School. The module is being based around
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet allowing the children to explore all
of the different aspects of the play that relate to modern day
society. Gang culture for example. The children have been
very responsive and love the opportunity of learning through drama.
This is what first drew me to this module because I have studied
performance art through to degree level.
As a mentor I am only required two hours a
week. Within those two hours it is fantastic to see how much the
children are learning and all of the new bonds and friendships that
are being made. Two hours a week is not a lot of time really, but
to the kids at The Children’s University: its two hours every week
that they really look forward to, and that is evident whenever you
see them. Overall – it is definitely a very rewarding experience. I
would recommend it to anyone and everyone!
