An HNC in an engineering discipline is considered to be one of the benchmark qualifications for the industry. This programme of study has been designed to give a substantial grounding in the technician engineering field of Building Services Engineering. The typical student will be either wishing to enter (or already hold a post in) design/planning, specification purchase, installation, or maintenance of building services equipment.

Course Content and Structure

The course provides study in mechanical, electrical and managerial subjects. The selection of subjects that may be studied includes:

• Electricity and Lighting for Building Services Engineering
• Air Conditioning for Complex Industrial and Commercial Buildings
• Heating Systems for Industrial and Specialist Applications
• Piped Distribution Services for Non-domestic Buildings
• Energy Utilisation and Efficiency for Building Services Engineering
• Refrigeration Technology for Construction and the Built Environment
• Electrical and Electronic Control Principles for Building Services Engineering
• Electrical Installations for Building Services Engineering
• Lighting Applications for Industrial and Commercial Buildings

Assessment

Assessment will be by a combination of methods including coursework, projects and examinations.

Entry Requirements

Entry onto the two year HNC requires one of the following:

• 120 UCAS Tariff Points- from at least 2 GCE A Level with supporting GCSE grades A-C in appropriate science math’s or technology subjects
• BTEC National Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma + NVQ level 3 trade qualifications
• BTEC National Level 3 Diploma in Building Services Engineering
• NVQ 3 Site Supervision or Site Technical Operations
• Mature entrants with previous construction experience may be recognised through Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)

We welcome applications from people of any age who might not meet the standard entry criteria, but we would expect to see evidence of continuing academic and/or professional development and a capacity to pursue the course successfully. 

If your application is successful, you will be invited to attend an interview to discuss your ability and suitability for the course.

Progression Routes

Students who successfully complete the course may choose to proceed to the HND Building Services Engineering or progress to professional institute examinations (CIBSE). Alternatively, they may choose to enter the workforce.
