The degree in Contemporary Performance Practice allows acting students to extend their skills and ideas about performance. You will have the opportunity to integrate digital technology into the creation of new and original work as well as be part of new developments in theatre arts for the 21st Century. We positively encourage collaboration with other performing arts practitioners across the School of Arts.

You will benefit from a low student staff ratio which enables a high number of contact hours with lecturing staff. This also allows for specific, structured, one-to-one feedback.

The teaching on BA (Hons) Contemporary Performance Practice puts great emphasis on preparation for professional life and progression routes beyond graduating. Throughout the three years, students have the opportunity to work alongside professional artists and practitioners as well as experiencing a two week work placement within the industry (sample placements can be with a theatre company, an artists’ agency, within a school, community arts project etc.)

Although students are required to carry out an academic study of theatre, we also believe in developing practical skills: all students receive 3 hours a week tuition in voice and movement as well as an additional class in the Feldenkrais Method, a unique movement awareness discipline used by world famous actors and directors such as Peter Brook, Whoopie Goldberg, Helen Hayes as well as musicians such as violinist Yehudi Menuhin аnd cellist Yo Yo.

We welcome students who have completed an HND or Foundation Diploma in Theatre, onto the 3rd year of our degree programme.

These infill students have the opportunity to integrate with our current undergraduate students, but will also receive additional academic support in dissertation skills before commencing the course

This course is designed to be both an exciting and a relevant learning experience for students, and the combination of both theoretical and practical knowledge is essential for a world in which performance is increasingly using mixed approaches. In both popular and classical culture, performances commonly use a variety of independent media: dance, film/video, sound, scenography, text, in conjunction with digital/computer based technologies.

Alternatively, you may choose to further your studies with the MA Digital Performance or the PGCE, both available at University Centre Doncaster

Student Comments

"The University Centre at High Melton is fantastic for inspiring creativity with its natural surroundings and views. The CPP course has enabled integration of interdisciplinary works alongside other creative courses, allowing exploration into a range of creative processes in the areas of performance. The course provides theoretical and practical training in both stage and screen as well as focusing on the future, providing support and information on the next stages of your career." RM, Year 3 student
"The reasons I like this course are that I get lots of support from tutors with work when I'm struggling. We are often working “outside of the box” with ideas and constantly pushing boundaries." VC, Year 3 student
"Firstly I really enjoy the fact that it’s not a very large university so everyone is almost like a family and get along so well. Also I like how we're encouraged to not only socialise with our own year group but also other year groups. Lastly I think the course is really good as rather than focusing in one area we touch on all different topics like filming, sound, lighting etc. I personally find it really interesting to see the other elements of what makes a piece of drama." MC, Year 2 student
