BA (Hons) Dance Practice
The BA (Hons) Dance Practice programme is designed for the
creative dancer, who is interested in exploring contemporary dance
and choreography.
The dance modules allow for a balance of continuing development
of practical dance skills as well as furthering knowledge in
choreography, technique, dance for camera and digital and
interdisciplinary performance. Throughout the course, you will have
the opportunity to experience creating work for a number of
settings including work for stage, camera and alternative
spaces.
The course gives you the opportunity to work within
interdisciplinary settings and create original work with theatre,
music, and music technology students.
You will also further your skills and knowledge of dance and
performance through working with visiting artists and lecturers.

Australian Dance Theatre, Robert Swinton, Hype Dance Company,
Electronic Dance Theatre, Troika Ranch, Sarah Rubidge, Gerry

Year one (Level 4)
- Performance - Includes site specific and collaborative
performance
- Dance Technique 1 - Will allow you to concentrate on developing
your technical skills through the practice of contemporary dance
techniques
- Choreography 1 - Focuses on approaches to choreography where
you will have the opportunity to perform in both group and solo
works
- Dance Language - Explores the evolution of contemporary dance
and innovation within the field
- Digital Technologies - An introduction to skills that are
needed within the context of digital arts and mixed media
performance
Year two (Level 5)
- Dance Technique 2 - Will allow you to continue to develop you
technical skills through the practice of contemporary dance
techniques
- Choreography 2 - Includes group choreography and choreographing
for others. The group piece is choreographed by a professional
company to give you a real experience of working within the
industry
- Music for Dancers - Allows you to develop your understanding of
the relationship between dance and music
- Dance for Camera - You will have the opportunity to develop
your awareness of screen performance through creating your own
dance for camera performance piece
- Digital Performance - You will learn to apply the skills needed
to create a performance that will include various performance
techniques and digital technologies
- Experimental Live Project (theory & practitioners) - You
will develop an understanding of aesthetic and technological
innovation within performance, this may include site specific,
installation and computer based performance
- Experimental Live Performance - You will experiment with the
making of digital/ multi media/ interdisciplinary performance
Year three (Level 6)
- Dance Technique - Will allow you to continue to develop your
technical skills through the practice of contemporary dance
techniques
- Applied Dance Practice - Gives you the opportunity to consider
you career in the field of dance. This module will give you hands
on experience as it is assessed through placements within
educational and industry settings
- Long Study: Dance Production - Allows you to consider yourself
as a dance artist and choreograph a piece that reflects your own
skills and interests in dance and performance
- Experimental Live Performance - You will continue to experiment
with digital/ multi media/ interdisciplinary practices in order to
create an innovative performance
- Dissertation - You will to carry out an independent
research project in an area of your choice
Assessment
Student progress is assessed throughout the course with written
feedback provided. You will be assessed through a variety of means
including work placements, essays, presentations and
performances
Entry Requirements
One of the following:
- 200 UCAS Tariff Points- from at least 2 GCE A Levels or BTEC
National qualifications
- Access to HE Diploma in an related programme with at least 45
credits at Level 3
- Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)

meet the standard entry criteria, but we would expect to see
evidence of continuing academic and/or professional development and
a capacity to pursue the course successfully.

This course is designed to be both an exciting and a relevant
learning experience for students, and the combination of both
theoretical and practical knowledge is essential for a world in
which performance is increasingly using mixed approaches. In both
popular and classical culture, performances commonly use a variety
of independent media: dance, film/video, sound, choreography in
conjunction with digital/computer based technologies. Graduates
will have acquired skills that will equip them for employment
across a variety of rapidly developing cultural and media
industries.
Alternatively, you may choose to further your studies with
postgraduate courses such as the MA Digital Performance (taught at
University Centre Doncaster) or a PGCE
