Staff Run Half Marathon for Charity

Posted: 8th May 2015

Hair and Beauty staff are currently training hard for the world’s leading half marathon, the Great North Run. Each year students are tasked with raising money for a chosen charity and this year Bluebell Wood children’s hospice was chosen.  The group decided to run the Great North Run to inspire the students, boost our charity totals and set an example to students about healthy living.

The team includes three non-employees as well as the following line up:

  • Paul Davies aka Paul Radcliff, doesn’t let his diabetes hold him back from being one of the girls. Long odds but worth a gamble
  • Kelly English aka ‘how did I get into this again’ English, entered once before but couldn’t run due to pregnancy, now she has no excuse. Excellent if the going is soft
  • Sarah Fearn aka Fabulous Fearny, has ran a marathon before so no pressure. Bookies favourite
  • Rachel Gordon aka Rachel Rum, roped in from Payroll and threatening to withhold wages if they don’t train properly. 2:1 to come home first!
  • Karen Gregory aka Kaptain Kazza, coach and seasoned runner, think road runner. A good bet but overuse of the whip can be a problem
  • Julia Maltby aka Julia Ennis, running around after teaching staff has been excellent training. A safe each way bet
  • Sarah Palma aka Mo Palma, couldn’t run for 60 second without oxygen. A rank outsider

The fearless bunch started a running club led by Karen Gregory at the start of the academic year and describe themselves as very much a mixed ability group with most never running before.

Training every Wednesday after work the team have gone from not being able to run for a bus to hopefully being able to complete a half marathon in September. The team are hoping to raise a minimum of £1,500 but ideally a great deal more.

We wish the team the best of luck!
