Apprentice Named in UK Squad for WorldSkills

Posted: 26th June 2015

Curtis Baker, a Painter & Decorator at Togel Contractors Ltd, based in Doncaster and former Doncaster College apprentice, has been named in Squad UK for the WorldSkills São Paulo 2015.

Curtis’ talent stood out throughout the last 11 months of gruelling and complex challenges that required just his free hand skill and keen eye for detail finally resulting in a place in the UK squad.

Throughout his apprenticeship and employment Curtis has been a great asset to Togel, Doncaster College and Doncaster as a whole.  Winning numerous awards he won the regional heats of the Johnstones “Young Painter of the Year”, entered the Skillbuild competition as a new entrant and was awarded a silver medal for his talents and was awarded third place at the Painting & Decorating Association “Young Paperhanger of the Year”.  Re-entering Skillbuild as a senior competitor he won the heat and entry to the Skillbuild final at the NEC, where he caught the eye of judges.  Curtis was also awarded runner-up in the CITB Apprentice of the Year competition.

Of Curtis’ time at the College Lecturer, Neil Preskey said, “Curtis is a role model for other students and soon proved to his tutors that he had the skills and focus needed to take part in competitions and become a fundamental part of his employers’ team. His mature attitude to learning and ability to work independently was excellent throughout this time. We wish him all the best approaching this competition and in the eyes of Doncaster College Curtis is already a winner.”

Curtis, currently studying for his level 4 apprenticeship with the WorldSkills organisation, said: “I’m really excited to have been recognised for doing what I enjoy, and even more so for being selected to become part of the UK Squad, it’s an excellent opportunity for me and acknowledges just how amazing Togel have been as a training provider. It’s an honour to be part of such a dedicated team and I’m looking forward to proving that the UK has some amazing talent!”

Go team UK!
