Classrooms Outdoors

Posted: 13th May 2016

Year 1 BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies students have been busy developing the outdoor classroom at High Melton.

Students submitted project proposals as part of their study for the Play and Learning module, and as part of the Leading and Effective Team module implemented these in the second semester. This practical element of the programme enables students to be assessed in innovative ways, developing their skills which they are able to take back to their work settings.

The projects included the development of:

  • A mud kitchen
  • A music wall
  • Fairy houses
  • Creative area
  • Literacy area

Each project was supported by a small budget, but a ‘free and found’ approach was taken. The area is freely open to visit, behind the Copley building at the University Centre, High Melton campus.

It is hoped that in September the outdoor classroom will be ready to invite practitioners from clap settings with children to support their learning and development outdoors. For further details please click here.
