The Hub is a Hate Crime Reporting Centre

Posted: 22nd June 2016

Did you know?

The Hub campus has been a Hate Crime reporting centre since the scheme was rolled out in 2010 by the Safer Stronger Doncaster Partnership.

What is Hate Crime?

Hate Crimes are defined as:

Any incident, which may or may not constitute a criminal offence, which is perceived by the victim or any other person, as being motivated by prejudice or hate, according to the victims defining factor(s).

Defining factors are described as a person’s race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation or disability (including learning disability).  Hate crimes differ from many other crime types as the offence is motivated (wholly or partly) by hostility towards the victim because of their defining factor(s).

What does a Reporting Centre do?

Hate Crime reporting centres offer accessible, safe and confidential spaces across the borough and The Hub is ideally located to be available to a wider range of people across all defining factors.

A key aim of Hate Crime reporting centres is to give people a choice of where to report incidents or crimes, as opposed to the traditional police reporting route.

Our Student Union Team

This month all of the Student Union Team updated their training to revise the College commitment to providing this support.  Rachael Long, Crime and Safer Doncaster Theme Manager, delivered the training and welcomed the continued commitment from The Hub to operate the centre and provide support to any hate crime victims.

Donna Robinson, Enrichment and Development Worker, noted “We have a zero tolerance approach to bullying at Doncaster College and being able to offer the Hate Crime reporting service is an extension of that commitment to our students, staff and visitors.”

What should I do to report a Hate Crime?

If you wish to report a Hate Crime at The Hub please ask for a member of the Student Union Team at Reception.
