Triple Win at Staff Awards

Posted: 6th June 2016

Health and Social Care Lecturer, Sharon Wigglesworth, the Information Services Service Desk and Engineer Teams as well as Lecturer in Beauty and Holistic Therapy, Karen Gregory have all been awarded the Professional Recognition Award for the 2015/16 Spring Term.

Presented by Principal and Chief Executive, George Trow the awards are designed to recognise the professional contribution that staff make towards the work of the College.

Nominators for Sharon said that, “Sharon makes the course enjoyable for all students, ensuring they have a positive experience whilst at the College. She has gone above and beyond in her role as a tutor, offering excellent support and guidance to all students and always makes time for others, even when she is busy. In short, we would just like to stress how much Sharon means, not just to the team but also to the students.”

The Information Services Service Desk and Engineer Teams are the second group to win the award as a team, with nominators acknowledging considerable changes over recent months. As a new team, the Service Desk Analysts and IT Engineers have had to hit the ground running in order to deliver the College’s requirements for maintaining support services.  The team are all approachable and friendly and do their best, for staff and students, to ensure the college system that we have works to its best capacity.  Our students now feel more confident, as do the tutors, with issues being identified and responded to in a much quicker and efficient way.  The department that was previously known for ‘can’t do’ has become invigorated, energised and professional.

There may be a feeling of déjà vu about the third winner and this is a unique moment as, for the first time, a member of staff has won the award for a second time.

Karen was one of 4 winners of the 2014/15 summer term Professional Recognition Award, although the reason for her nomination at that time was very different to the reason for her nomination for the 2015/16 spring term award which is that she has given up many hours of her free time to set up a beginners’ running club for Doncaster College staff.

She is unfailingly enthusiastic about the health and wellbeing of all involved and provides the group with much needed support, guidance and inspiration. Her motivational and mentoring skills provide a significant contribution to the whole college community – bringing together colleagues from across the college who may not otherwise have had any contact.

The award is given three times a year so a member of staff is honoured once a term. Staff are nominated by at least five colleagues from different areas of the College. The College’s Executive team then views the nominations and decides on a winner.
