Music Technology students from University Centre Doncaster have been working with a major Sheffield arts festival to create original music for an arts installation project.
Bear’s Deep Sea Adventure was installed in the Botanical Gardens as part of the Illuminate the Gardens event, attracting thousands of visitors over the weekend. The project offered the BA Creative Music Technology students the opportunity to create a soundscape to immerse the public into a magical deep sea world, teeming with mesmerising sounds, shapes, colours and textures.
Working in partnership with local arts company Ignite Imaginations, students on the BA were commissioned to compose an immersive soundscape piece to be installed in the garden’s Victorian Bear Pit. As well as offering students valuable professional experience, the work also forms part of their assessment for the Composition for Media module, which focuses on the application of music composition in a variety of industry contexts, including TV, advertising and Film.
Vicki Rolley, project co-ordinator at Ignite Imaginations, was delighted with the contribution made: “The soundscape is really great! They’ve done a really good job… it’s lovely to have the students involved”.
This is the latest in a number of successful professional projects for the Creative Music Technology students, having most recently been involved in the Microbes exhibition at The Point in Doncaster over the summer, along with recording and engineering a pop record with local up-and-coming vocalists from Yorkshire Fame Academy, set for public release later this year.
