Posted: 12th March 2019

12 Current and past apprentices from Doncaster College met with local MP Dame Rosie Winterton for National Apprenticeship Week 2019.

The meeting took place on Friday 8th March at Doncaster College with apprentices sharing their stories with the local MP. Representatives from local businesses Wabtec and Smith Bros also got involved to discuss the benefits of apprenticeships and the impact they have had on their businesses.

The apprentices that attended the discussion work for a variety of companies including Costal and Sheffield City Council and all share unique experiences on their apprenticeship journey. 2 Of those were brother and sister Alex and Lewis Yates who have both completed their apprenticeships and have successfully secured full-time employment with their employers.

“After dropping out of University I was totally stuck but an apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to re-train in something new and has given me the career I have today.” – Alex Yates, previous marketing apprentice.

Rosie also discussed the difficulties within the Apprenticeship Levy and what more needs to be done in parliament.

“It’s not just about planning for the business, it’s creating the opportunities. Doncaster College look at our current apprentices and find suitable candidates alike with genuine interests in who we are and what we do.” – Pete Finch and Dave Horner, Smith Bros.
