WHAT IS THE PROCESS?

Depending on the sector, you will usually attend College one day per week and your employer will give you work based training whilst at work for the remainder of the week.

WHAT DO I NEED TO GET ONTO AN APPRENTICESHIP?

To study on an Apprenticeship at Doncaster College you will require three GCSEs grade A*-C as well as already being employed in the relevant sector/chosen area of study. All Apprentices will be interviewed by the employer as well as undertaking an initial assessment at the College. Prior experience and grades will be taken into consideration.

WHAT LEVELS ARE APPRENTICESHIPS AVAILABLE AT?

Doncaster College offers Apprenticeships at intermediate, higher and advanced levels.

HOW MUCH WILL I BE PAID?

You will be guaranteed minimum Apprenticeship wage with some employers paying more based on experience.

HOW LONG DO APPRENTICESHIPS TAKE?

The length and time of your course will depend on each individual subject and employer, usually lasting 12-18 months but sometimes extending to the maximum of four years.

WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP MADE UP OF?

The Apprenticeship is made up of a relevant competence based qualification, Functional Skills and a Technical Certificate/Diploma.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

From your first day you will be assigned an Assessor, who will visit you at least once a month in your work place to evaluate you and ensure you are getting the support from your employer that you need.

HOW DO I GET STARTED ON AN APPRENTICESHIP?

You’ll need to think carefully about the field of work in which you want to train. It’s a good idea to discuss this with your parents/carers/guardians or Careers Advisor at school. Once you have an idea of what your interests are you can start applying for suitable jobs. You can also contact us for more information and a chat about opportunities available.

DO I NEED TO BE EMPLOYED WHEN STARTING MY APPRENTICESHIP?

An Apprenticeship is a job training so all prospective Apprentices need to be employed in the area they wish to gain their qualifications. You will not be able to enrol on the course without an employer who is willing to take you on and pay you a wage. We can support you in finding the right employment.

WHAT SORT OF PERSON IS ACCEPTED ON TO AN APPRENTICESHIP?

To do an Apprenticeship, you will need to be able to show that you can use your own initiative and that you are the right person for the job. You will need to be committed and willing to work hard, as well as completing on the job training. Working well on your own as well as in a team is another important requirement. As a student on an Apprenticeship you need to be realistic about the amount of work you may have to do and you should be prepared for study.

CAN I PROGRESS ON TO FURTHER OR HIGHER EDUCATION?

Most Apprenticeships offer a potential progression from intermediate through to advanced through to higher levels. Advanced Apprentices can progress onto a Level 4 industry qualification or higher education qualification such as a HNC/D or a Foundation Degree.
