Course Overview

The Animal Care Level 1 Diploma provides learners with knowledge and skills in key areas relating to the Land Based sector, supporting progression to Level 2 land based provisions and employment.

Added Value

  • You will carry out practical activities and assessments in our on-site animal facilities and an external farm. You will gain hands on experience of caring for livestock, small animals and exotic species as well as working with the general public.
  • You will be taught by our industry expert staff who are experienced in a wide range of backgrounds, including zoo-keeping, veterinary nursing, welfare and wildlife conservation.
  • You will take part in educational visits thanks to our links with Land Based employers such as zoos, vet surgeries, rescue centers, farms and conservation organisations.
  • Some of our learners have taken part in overseas placements including South Africa game reserve management and Swedish farm placements.
  • Our new Skills Academy gives you the opportunity to enhance your skills and career prospects further by carrying out industry relevant techniques.

Units and Structure

Course elements

  • You will demonstrate safe working practices within the land based sector and take part in an online certified assessment which will contribute to your overall grade.
  • You will carry out personal development performance tasks such as team working exercises, independent working practices and land based legislation compliance.
  • You will demonstrate knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and legislation within your assessments in animal health and well-being.
  • You will demonstrate practical animal husbandry techniques including grooming, bathing, exercising, cleaning out and providing a suitable diet.
  • You will administer treatments and examine animal health and diseases in domestic, farm and exotic species.
  • You will evaluate animal health conditions and assist with providing supplementary treatments.
  • You will take part in animal first aid including first response and working with animal specialists.
  • You will carry out animal movements in compliance with relevant legislation.
  • You will investigate habitats and populations of native wildlife species under the herbivore, carnivore and omnivore categories.

The Animal Care Level 1 Diploma is made up of 7 units which will be covered over a one year period.


Students are assessed by a variety of methods including direct observation, written coursework, oral questioning, log books and examination. Assessments are graded pass or refer. An overall pass, merit or distinction grade will be issued at the end of the year.

  • All applicants must complete an initial assessment in Math’s and English and attend an interview.

Progression and Employment

The Animal Care Level 1 Diploma has been designed to enable learners to progress onto Level 2 Animal Care Diploma, where you will be given the opportunity to progress your knowledge and skills. The course also prepares learners for employment within the Land Based sector. On completion of this course you could be employed as; Kennel Worker; Pet Shop Assistant; Cattery Worker; Dog Walker; Trainee Park Ranger.
