Course Overview

  • You will carry out practical activities and assessments in our on-site animal facilities.
  • You will gain hands on experience of caring for small animals and exotic species.
  • You will be taught by our industry expert staff who are experienced in a wide range of backgrounds, including zoo-keeping, veterinary nursing, welfare and wildlife conservation.
  • You will take part in educational visits thanks to our links with Land Based employers such as zoos, vet surgeries, rescue centres, farms and conservation organisations.
  • Our new Skills Academy gives you the opportunity to enhance your skills and career prospects further by carrying out industry relevant techniques.

Units and Structure

Course elements

  • You will demonstrate personal development skills for independent living including catering in our onsite facilities.
  • You will take part in safe working practices within the land based sector including checking animal accommodations and restraint equipment.
  • You will carry out personal development performance tasks such as team working exercises and independent working practices.
  • You will handle and restrain small mammals for grooming, health checking and rehoming.
  • You will demonstrate practical animal husbandry techniques including grooming, bathing, exercising, cleaning out and providing a suitable diet.
  • You will provide preventative treatments including small mammal nail clipping, reptile bathing and exercising using different specialist equipment.
  • You will measure weights of animals, sizes of the animal’s accommodations and times the animals are fed to promote Math within the land based sector.
  • You will record animal husbandry and treatments in line with legislation and promote English within the land based sector.

The Life Skills Qualification is made up of 37 credits over a variety of units which will be covered over a one year period.

Progression and Employment

The Life Skills programme has been designed to enable learners to progress onto Level 1 Animal Care Diploma, where you will be given the opportunity to improve your knowledge and skills.
