The largest proportion of workers within the industry are engaged in craft occupations. All of these require self-motivation, skills in numeracy, communications and problem solving, as well as a broad range of technical skills. Therefore whilst at college you will be expected to undertake Functional Skills/GCSE’s throughout the year which will help in the preparation into employment.

Units and Structure
General Core Units
Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction – Underpinning theoretical knowledge based around the Construction Industry.
Principle of Building Construction Information and Communication – Underpinning theoretical knowledge based on the collation of technical information, the vast amounts of quantities and the importance of communicating with others in the Construction Industry.
The structure, roles, responsibilities, terms, policies and procedures in the Construction Industry.
Occupational specific Units
Produce Woodworking Joints – Underpinning theoretical and practical knowledge regarding the production of drawing rods, cutting list and bench woodworking joints using hand tools.
Maintain and Use Carpentry & Joinery Hand Tools – Underpinning theoretical and practical knowledge regarding how to sharpen, clean, store and use Carpentry & Joinery hand tools.
Prepare and Use Carpentry & Joinery Portable Power Tools – Underpinning theoretical and practical knowledge regarding how to check health and safety before use, use power tools and store power tools
This course also includes tutorials, Functional Skills/GCSE’s which includes English and Maths and Personal and Professional Development.
Entry Requirements
You'll need to have:
- All applicants are required to undertake an initial and diagnostic assessment in Maths and English and achieve level 1 scores prior to an interview, although the tutor may offer a place if achieve a level 1 and an entry 3.
- It is also important that you have an interest in this dynamic industry, that you have a lively and enquiring mind, an interest in the sector, a willingness to explore new ideas and the ability to communicate your ideas.
