Course Overview

The Diploma in First Line Management is aimed at current or potential managers who have as yet received no formal qualification in management. It is designed for those working in a wide range of organisations that have, or soon will have, some management or supervisory responsibility.

Course members may be managers or supervisors with considerable work experience but who have not completed any formal management qualifications. There will be others who are on the threshold of management who require vital management skills and a qualification that verifies their competence.  This qualification is relevant to people who are responsible for:

  • Allocating work to others
  • Achieving results by using resources effectively
  • Carrying out policy in a defined area of authority

Units and Structure

Students gain unlimited access to Europe’s most comprehensive management information resource, the Management Information Centre (MIC).  There are seven units including one overarching project which includes a combination of:

  • Personal Development as a First Line Manager
  • Resource Planning
  • Meeting Stakeholder Needs
  • Managing and Communicating Information
  • Identifying Development Opportunities
  • Improving Team Performance

Assessment is via a combination of work-based assignments, case study and presentations. This ensures that you develop a range of key management skills and that you undertake work study which is relevant to your own workplace context. Assessment will focus on the practical application of management ideas.

There are no specific entry requirements for this qualification but you will need to attend an interview with the programme leader.

Acceptance onto the CMI Diploma in Leadership and Management is via interview by the CMI Programme Leader. However, candidates are likely either to hold a Certificate in Team Leading and/or have a few years’ experience at supervisory or first line management level.  In the first instance you need to contacta.pendlebury-brown@don.ac.uk for an application form.
