Course Overview

Who are the qualifications for?

  • For candidates who work or who want to work as teachers/trainers in the further education and skills sector.
  • For candidates who have just started a teaching/training role.
  • For teachers/trainers who are seeking career progression in their area of work.
  • For candidates who work with learners on a one-to- one basis.
  • For candidates who teach in industry.
  • For candidates who have already achieved some Learning and Development units that can be carried forward into this qualification.
  • For candidates who are assessors and wish to achieve a teaching/training qualification.
  • For candidates with a CET who wish to top this up to a full level 5 teaching qualification applicable to the qualified teaching pay scales across FE institutes and apply for QTLS through the Society for Education and Training.

Units and Structure

The qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers/trainers in the further education and skills sector, such as:

  • Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
  • Theories, principles and models in education and training
  • Wider professional practice and development in education and training
  • Action Learning to support development of specific pedagogy
  • Action Research
  • Developing, using and organising resources in a specialist area

Entry Requirements

You'll need to have:

Candidates must be considering a subject for delivery and be aiming to achieve / or have achieved a qualification and/or have experience in their subject/skill at the appropriate level.

All trainee teachers joining this qualification programme not having evidence of at least level 2 in maths and English, should undertake an initial assessment of skills in English, mathematics and ICT. They should record their development needs and agree an action plan to address them as this is generally considered a job requirement for a qualified lecturer in the FE and Skills Sector

Initial assessment and induction
Learners must undertake an initial assessment of their own skills in literacy, language, numeracy and ICT, as well as other learner characteristics at the beginning of their course. This assessment should be used to:

  • Identify support and development needs
  • Identify level appropriate
  • Provide a basis for progression and professional

City & Guilds cannot accept any registrations for candidates under 19 as this qualification is not approved for under 19s.

Debbie Pulleyblank

I have been working in Education for 23 years both in the United Kingdom and The Netherlands, teaching from Level 2 to Level 7 in the Further Education and Skills sector. I have also been involved in designing curriculum for Undergraduate, Post Graduate and Professional Programmes.

My industry background lies in Fashion and Textiles, but after moving into teaching I have worked closely with trainee teachers and acted in a mentor role to numerous new employees. I am also a qualified assessor, and have acted as an internal verifier and external verifier both in Further Education and Higher Education.

I am currently employed as a Lecturer in Education within the Department of Education, Health and Community Practice.

Progression and Employment

The natural course for further study after the Diploma in Education and Training is the BA (Hons) in Education and Advancing Professional Practice (Top Up). This course will allow you to gain the additional 180 credits needed part-time across 7 Saturdays per year for 3 years to gain a full honours degree.
