Units and Structure

The course includes practical work, tasks and written assignments. There will be an opportunity for you to gain work experience in The Hub flower shop.

Course Content:

  • Unit 1 Introduction to Art and Design for Florists
  • Unit 2 Identification and processing of cut flower material and pot plants
  • Unit 3 Introduction to plant processes and planted designs
  • Unit 4 Hand tied and Presentation Designs
  • Unit 5 Funeral and Sympathy Designs
  • Unit 6 Floral arrangements
  • Unit 7 Wedding designs and Accessories
  • Unit 8 Display of Floristry goods
  • Unit 9 Introduction to working in the Floristry industry
  • Unit 10 Function decorating

In addition to your course you will attend regular tutorials. You will also study functional skills in Maths and  English. You will be required to complete a minimum of 40 hours work experience in the industry and be expected to work alongside our shop manager at “Flowers at the Hub“.

Entry Requirements

You'll need to have:

  • Level 1 Land Based Diploma in Floristry
  • All applicants must complete an initial assessment in Literacy and Numeracy.
  • You will attend an interview with a Floristry tutor.
  • You must have an interest in flowers, plants.
  • An interest in art and design is beneficial.
  • You must commit to 100% attendance.

Jo Cullingworth

I joined Doncaster College as a lecturer in 2004 and currently deliver the level 2 and part time floristry programmes.

I have worked in the floristry industry since 1984 and have extensive knowledge and experience specialising in commercial floristry techniques. My career in floristry has allowed me to gain experience in a variety of areas including demonstration, training, commercial enterprise, wholesale buying and promotion.

I have had my own floristry business for a number of years providing all aspects of commercial floristry including corporate design, bespoke wedding design and specialised function decorating and display.

I am lucky to work with a team of professionals that share their experience and knowledge to provide an enjoyable and challenging learning environment that prepares the learner for work within the floristry industry. As a team we strive to ensure every learner has a positive experience that stretches and develops their practical skills and knowledge.

Enrichment Opportunities

During your time as at Doncaster College you will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of enrichment events including work experience in the college florist shop, varied trips and national competitions as part of your programme of study

Progression Opportunities

Successful completion of this qualification will enable you to further your studies at Doncaster College studying the City and Guilds Diploma in Floristry Level 3.

Employment Opportunities

This Qualification will provide opportunities to gain employment within the floristry industry in positions such as a junior and senior florist with a starting salary of £15,000. Or gain employment working as a demonstrator, corporate florist, wedding event florist or wholesale buyer.
