Course Overview

  • You will carry out practical activities in our on-site animal facilities, gaining hands on experience of caring for small mammal species.
  • You will be taught by our industry expert staff who are experienced in a wide range of backgrounds, including zoo-keeping, veterinary nursing, welfare and wildlife conservation.
  • You will be shown land based educational pathways to enable you to reach your career goal.

Units and Structure

The Introduction to Small Mammals course is a 3 hour practical based session, covering the following elements:

  • You will demonstrate safe working practices within the land based sector.
  • You will take part in practical small mammal husbandry techniques including cleaning out.
  • You will evaluate small mammal health conditions and assist with providing supplementary treatments.
  • You will carry out small mammal handling techniques.
  • You will feed suitable small mammal diets for rodents and exotic species.
