Course Overview

You will have the opportunity to bring real workplace issues to the table, to analyse and find solutions to the challenges you encounter in your own working environment. The course is ‘action based’ which means that in your assignments and dissertation you will apply your learning directly to your work, giving you the opportunity to make real improvements to the business. You will also benefit from developing the ability to objectively challenge the status quo, to critically analyse situations, to reflect on your actions and learning, and to gain confidence in your management and leadership skills.

Units and Structure

You will study the following subjects during your time with us:

  • Managing Information and Finance
  • Strategic and Operational Management
  • Managing People and Knowledge
  • International Business
  • Managing Culture and Change
  • Innovation, Enterprise and Marketing
  • Research Methods

You will also complete a dissertation for which you will research a real strategic issue within your organisation, implement changes as a result of your research and evaluate the impact of your actions. This is an opportunity to develop your personal skills as well as to add real value to your organisation.

There is an option to complete your dissertation during a your second year if study or in a third year of study. All dissertation years will involve workshops and individual tutorials.

Entry Requirements

You'll need to have:

You will need an undergraduate degree or equivalent or another qualification of a satisfactory standard for postgraduate admission (Level 6 or equivalent, preferably in a business related course).We will also consider non-graduates with a minimum of three years relevant experience in the last five years, at the appropriately senior level of responsibility,  and wish to complement your experience with a formal business qualification.

Exemption is available for specific modules where prior learning can be mapped to the programme’s learning outcomes (further information is available from the Programme Leader). For example, you may have a postgraduate Level 7 or professional qualification which may mean you are eligible for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and so may be able to enter directly into the second year of the qualification

All applicants will be interviewed by the School of Business and Management and approved by the University of Cumbria prior to being accepted on to the programme.

International students may apply to study on our international MBA. Information is available from the International Office.
