Course Overview

You should be self directed and able to act autonomously by applying knowledge and skills gained to your management practice. You will creatively deal with complex human resource issues and uncertainty through using systematic models and procedures.

You will communicate clearly to a range of audiences using a variety of media and be able to recognise the need for, and have the ability to implement and manage, change.

You will be confident in a variety of team roles and take leadership roles where appropriate and make decisions in complex and unpredictable situations.

You will make the strategic alignment between an organisation’s strategic goals and their human resource strategy.

Units and Structure

You will study the following subjects during your time with us:

  • Developing and Applying Business Skills from an HR perspective
  • The Context of Human Resources and the role of Employee Engagement
  • Managing Employment Relations through effective Leadership and Development
  • Resourcing, Talent Management and Reward
  • Research Methods

You will also complete a dissertation for which you will research a real strategic issue within your organisation, implement changes as a result of your research and evaluate the impact of your actions. This is an opportunity to develop your personal skills as well as to add real value to your organisation. There is an option to complete your dissertation during your second year if study or in a third year of study. All dissertation years will involve workshops and individual tutorials.

Students are required to attend a three day weekend residential in Year 2, which is devoted to the development of skills in employment relations practice.

  1. An undergraduate degree or another qualification of a satisfactory standard for postgraduate admission(Level 6 or equivalent, preferably in a business related course) or:
  2. A CIPD Certificate in Business Awareness and Advanced Professional Study (CBAAPS) or the Developing Business Awareness and Study Skills Award (DBASS) or equivalent, PLUS three years HR experience at advisory level or:
  3. An equivalent Level 6 qualification in a relevant subject (Management, Human Resource Management, Learning and Development) PLUS three years HR experience at advisory level. We will also consider non-graduates with a minimum of three years relevant HR experience at the appropriately senior level of responsibility.

All applicants will be interviewed by the School of Business and Management and approved by the University of Cumbria prior to being accepted onto the programme.

Direct entry onto Year 3 is possible if previous study can be mapped to the learning outcomes. Please contact the Programme Leader for further information
