Course Overview

You will build on the skills and knowledge you learn at Level 2 and develop your programming and nutritional expertise.

As part of the programme you will receive access to an online learning portal which will give you all the key info and knowledge to be successful on the programme. This course will be an interactive online learning programme with 16 contact days with your tutor. You will have access to online tutorials where you can speak to your tutor.

Units and Structure

Upon successful completion of the Level 2 Fitness Instructor course you will be able to progress onto the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training. The additional units you will cover at Level 3 are:

  • Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise and Health
  • Programming Personal training with Clients
  • Delivering Personal Training Sessions
  • Applying Principles of Nutrition to a Physical Activity Programme

Entry Requirements

You'll need to have:

Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym based).

Tutors and Student Support

John Heaton

John Heaton

Sports Tutor and Course Leader

John has been a member of the Sports and Public Services team since January 2015. Prior to this he had been lecturing at Wakefield College, as well as working as Strength and Conditioning coach for the Athlete Development Programme.

John has over 17 years industry experience as both a Personal Trainer and Strength & Conditioning coach and he is currently Head of Strength and Conditioning at Batley Bulldogs. He is a successful athlete in his own right, winning the World Championships in Drug Free Bodybuilding in 2010 & 2011 in Barcelona and New York respectively.

John teaches a range of modules here at Doncaster College using his vast experience and knowledge to make the lessons current, practical and engaging. His main areas of expertise are Strength & Conditioning, Fitness Training/Programming and Sports Nutrition. John also has experience in sports injuries and massage having worked as Sports Massage Therapist for both the Italian Rugby League team, England Water Polo squad and Morley RUFC.
