This online programme will meet the sector demands and employer needs for a highly skilled and qualified children’s workforce. It will support those professionals working within the Early Years sector who require opportunities to continue to advance their professional careers.
Children’s services are a diverse sector, and the MA in Early Childhood Studies offers a specialist programme that will attract those employed in Early Years, foundation and primary sectors including owner/ managers from the private, voluntary and independent sector, foundation and primary teaching. In addition, this programme will support the progression needs of those working in wider children’s services.
- Course Level
This postgraduate distance learning course will provide a broad base of topic areas that will enable students to develop their ability to critically reflect and evaluate their own practice from an informed professional perspective. Students will study a suite of modules over 3 years, that focus on the safeguarding and protection of children from the pressures and influences of modern-day society. In addition, students will identify current influences that are shaping policy and informing practice locally, nationally, and globally. The relationship between the politics of knowledge and the social constructions of teaching and learning maybe explored. It will also develop enhanced awareness of macro, micro and international contemporary issues to clarify and determine priorities for innovative and enterprising projects within early childhood.
12 hours a week private study to access study materials and engage with wider reading and research. This course is studied 100% online.

The MA offers you an opportunity to advance your knowledge, understanding and professional practice through engagement with current research and thinking in early childhood. It also involves a reflection on, and analysis of, your own professional practice. You’ll be assessed through ongoing coursework and a written Major Independent Study.
A Bachelor’s degree at 2:2 is required plus 2 years relevant professional experience
• A current satisfactory DBS Enhanced Certificate
• Practitioners are required to either be in paid employment or undertaking a voluntary placement for a minimum of 2 days per week. It will underpin practitioners’ experiences in the workplace through studying a suite of modules that will enhance and support career progression.
Grade 4/C in GCSE English and mathematics is desirable but not essential. If you do not have these qualifications, you will still be accepted onto the programme but would need to realise that future employment may require these.
Career opportunities and potential continuing professional development include, further and higher education tutors, leadership roles within early childhood and doctoral research. Graduates have gone on to roles as early years educators at nurseries and play therapists at children’s hospitals.
