I am pleased to bring you the first edition of the Early Years Magazine, Summer 2015, which is designed to support the growing community of practice within the Department of Early Years, at University Centre Doncaster. Academics, researchers and specialist trainers share their work in order to enhance practice and support children in their development and learning. Central to this is the programme of Early Years conferences that are held at the University Centre three times a year, in the spring, summer and autumn and which attract 120 delegates from Doncaster and the surrounding areas. Delegates are employed in a range of capacities in private, voluntary and independent settings as well as children’s centres, schools and private home based care but who all share a vision to develop themselves professionally and ensure they are supporting better outcomes for children. Each conference event is designed with a particular focus and the day starts with a keynote speaker and is then further enhanced by a range on workshops which provide practical ways for practitioners to develop their practice.
Keynote speakers and workshop facilitators have provided some articles for this first edition to share with practitioners, students and early childhood educators. In addition I have provided two pieces of research undertaken by undergraduates from the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies programme at University Centre. These have been selected to celebrate the students’ achievements and provide new insight and understanding of topics at the forefront of Early Years provision.
The 8th Early Years Conference Supporting Children with Special Educational Needs and Disability will be held on Saturday 28th November 2015. The keynote will be by Shabang – Kim Reuter and Russ Elias theatre practitioners with over 20 years experience of creating music, song, drama and theatre for special needs settings
